Fasting and Discipline
But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
Fasting is not religious punishment. It is a way of reminding the body that appetite does not get final authority.
Jesus assumes His people will fast, but He locates the practice in secrecy, sincerity, and relationship with the Father. Fasting exposes attachments, comforts, cravings, and reflexes. It can reveal how quickly the body and mind reach for relief. Done wisely, it becomes a school of hunger and surrender. Fasting says, 'I want God more than my default comforts.' It is not a performance. It is a reordering. If you fast, do so with wisdom, humility, and practical good sense.
Whatever you cannot say no to easily may be saying more about your appetites than you realize.
You reach for distraction, food, noise, or scrolling before you reach for God. Fasting can make those hidden reflexes visible.
God is sanctifying appetite in this season. What once ruled by habit can bow to holy desire.

Father, train my appetite. Teach me to hunger for You more deeply than I hunger for easy relief. Use fasting to reveal what rules me and to re-center my heart in secret devotion. In Jesus' name, amen.
My appetites will not rule me. I am learning holy hunger.
- What comfort do I reach for most quickly?
- What might fasting reveal about my reflexes?
- What am I asking God to deepen through this practice?
Set a clear but modest fasting plan for this week, including the form, the time, and the prayer focus.
"This week I learned that fasting is not emptiness for its own sake; it is hunger redirected toward God."
